2014 Holmes County Duathlon

Walking on to Wellness: Spring 2014

The Walking on to Wellness team competition was between March 1 and April 24, 2014.  The competition consisted 20 teams and over 500 participants from all over Holmes County.  Teams included churches, worksites, groups of friends and relatives, schools, and government agencies.  Berlin Farmstead Restaurant won the prize for the highest points per person for the entire 8-week period.  Team members logged an incredible 4,336 points per person which narrowly edged out the Thin It to Win It.  The following are the final team standings.  We are looking forward to organizing another competition in the fall and will announce details as they are determined.

Bicycle Helmet Awareness Week 2014

The Ohiologo Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Healthy Holmes Coalition partnered on Saturday, May 17th to provide the community with a Put A Lid On It Protect Before you Pedal event.  Coalition members were on site to provide educational materials and assist youth with properly fitting their new helmets. Youth were encouraged to always wear a helmet while bicycling, skateboarding, and sledding.

          

 

2013 Holmes County Triathlon

The 2nd annual Holmes County Triathlon was on July 20, 2013. The course featured a ½ mile swim in Lake Buckhorn, 13 mile bicycle ride through the Becks Mills Valley, and concluded with a 5K run on the Holmes County Trail. 83 people participated and we hope to see many more participants at the 2014 Holmes County Triathlon. The 2013 Holmes County Triathlon was generously supported by volunteers and sponsors from our community which included the Commercial and Savings Bank, the Hummel Group, First Knox Bank, Killbuck Savings Bank, Kinetics, Nature's Food Market, Real Estate Showcase, and Troy Miller Agency.  We would also like to thank Berlin Natural Bakery, Wal-Mart, Nature's Food Market, and Majora Lane Nursing Home for donating food, 20 local businesses for donating prizes for the winners, and 50 volunteers who assisted on race day.  

Grow It, Try It, Like It Curriculum Spring 2013

The Healthy Holmes County Coalition partnered with Kno-Co-Ho-Ashland Head Start to offer the Grow It, Try It, Like It curriculum to preschool children in Holmes County. Health educators provided 2 fun interactive sessions involving spinach and strawberries to children in the Glenmont and Millersburg classrooms.  The curriculum was also provided to students in the Berlin Montessori Preschool classroom.

Bicycle Helmet Awareness Week 2013

In celebration of Bicycle Helmet Awareness Week, the Healthy Holmes County Coalition sponsored an event providing free bicycle helmets to children on Saturday May 11, 2013.  The helmet giveaway was at the Trail Depot along the Holmes County Trail in Millersburg.  16 children took advantage of the opportunity to receive a free helmet and be fitted with a helmet that was the correct size.  Staff from the Millersburg Police Department and Active Chiropractic talked with children about bicycle and traffic safety.  The event was made possible through a grant from the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

 

Grow It, Try It, Like It Classes in Head Start Classrooms: Fall 2012

The Healthy Holmes County Coalition partnered with Kno-Co-Ho-Ashland Head Start to offer the Grow It, Try It, Like It curriculum to preschool children in Holmes County. Health educators introduced cantaloupe, squash, and sweet potatoes to children in the Glenmont, Millersburg, Berlin classrooms. According to teachers, the program successfully taught children something new and increased their willingness to try the featured item.

The inaugural Holmes County Triathlon was on July 21, 2013. The course featured a ½ mile swim in Lake Buckhorn, 13 mile bicycle ride through the Becks Mills Valley, and concluded with a 5K run on the Holmes County Trail. 85 people participated in the inaugural triathlon and we hope to see many more participants at the 2013 Holmes County Triathlon. The 2012 Holmes County Triathlon was generously supported by volunteers and sponsors from our community which included Active Chiropractic, Berlin Hotel and Fitness Club, the Commercial and Savings Bank, the Hummel Group, Killbuck Savings Bank, Kinetics, Nature's Food Market, and Real Estate Showcase.
